The Direct Vision Standard (DVS), enforced by Transport for London (TfL), mandates that heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) over 12 tonnes require a permit to operate within Greater London. DVS STAR RATING SYSTEM
Each vehicle is assigned a ‘star rating’ from 0 to 5, reflecting the driver’s direct line of sight from the cab:
• 0 Stars: Minimal direct vision.
• 5 Stars: Excellent direct vision.
These ratings are determined based on the vehicle’s original design and do not account for any aftermarket safety systems installed. Vehicles with a rating below 3 stars must be equipped with additional safety equipment to qualify for a permit. Operating without a permit can result in substantial daily fines for both operators and drivers.
